Sharing Your Paleo Lifestyle With Your Family and Friends

Going Paleo can be a huge change. When we make big changes in our lives, our first instinct is often to tell everybody about it. However, a lot of us have begun to dread that one person who seems to be pushing their lifestyle on to other people and bragging about all the great things they are doing with their lives when the rest of us are still struggling.

We don’t want to gloat. We don’t want to act like we are rubbing things in the faces of others. We don’t want to be perceived as annoying because we are passionate about something we truly care about.

So how do we do that without causing issues or having other people rolling their eyes the second we turn our backs?

It’s simple. instead of bragging about what is going well for you, simply invite them to try something that you enjoy. Speak to a friend or family member and say something along the lines of, “This recipe I tried is fantastic, I think you would really like it. I care about you and think having healthy options would really enrich my life, so I am trying a new eating style. Have you heard of the Paleo diet?”

From there, it is much more likely that your friend or family member will be receptive. You have shared something with them that you think will make them feel good. You have expressed the why of your decision rather than simply stating that your choice is right and it is working for you and it is something that everyone should try. You aren’t looking down your nose on someone who might not particularly care for the idea or acting as if you will judge someone else for their choices. You are simply inviting them to try something because it is important to you that you, and the people you care about most, take good care of yourselves.

Of course, no matter how well you present yourself and how genuine your intent may be, there is bound to be someone out there who may turn their noses up at you and assume that because you are bettering your life, you are looking down on the people around you. If you say no thank you to something someone else offers they may hold a grudge because they are bitter or jealous that they themselves do not have the same conviction to begin a healthier lifestyle. Or maybe it simply hurts their feelings and that emotion is misplaced.

That is why it is important to be as clear and direct with friends and family members as possible right away. Let them know that this is a choice you are making because you firmly believe that a healthy lifestyle is important, and you will continue to try to include them in healthy recipes and you would appreciate it if they respect the fact that your diet is now something you are not willing to compromise, even to spare their feelings. The ones who love you most will understand and rally to support you, and those are the people you need to keep in your life!
